Are you aware that there are two chapters of Delta Kappa Gamma (Omega and Delta) in the Great Falls Area? These chapters consist of current and retired Great Falls and surrounding area women educators who want to make a difference.
Defined by DKG International, “Delta Kappa Gamma is an International professional society whose members are outstanding women educators. The nurturing environment of the Society encourages all members to grow and reach the highest levels of professional and personal accomplishments their many talents allow.”
DKG is also a philanthropic organization. Overall, DKG at all levels-international, state and chapter supports teachers and other community organizations by giving approximately $3,000,000 in “scholarships, grants, and projects”.
Founded in 1929, all chapters aspire to emulate the mission of its founders. All chapters promote growth, both professionally and personally, of current and/or retired educators.
The local Omega Chapter meets monthly in a community space where a community organization or individual provides a short program highlighting a topic or service in Great Falls and the surrounding area. In January, the chapter members met at Paris Gibson Education Center where Principal Yenta Jaques informed the group on how Paris meets the needs of students through the different program options offered. As part of DKG’s philanthropic efforts, members brought items for Paris’s food pantry. Because of the night’s presentation members were made aware of the challenges that youth face in our community and how we all can help and support.
In the past year, the Omega Chapter has learned from and supported Alliance for Youth, United Way, and Scottish Rite. In the coming months, the chapter will learn from and support the Great Falls Clinic Legacy Housing Center, Cascade Senior Center, and the IND Hemp Plant in Fort Benton.
The Delta Chapter also meets monthly and supports our community in the following ways: 1. Donation to “My Student in Need” to purchase sleeping bags for our homeless students 2.Donation to “The Children’s Museum” to support their after school club for elementary students 3. Donation of money for our members teaching in the classroom to purchase snacks and materials for their classroom and projects 4. Two monthly drawings for a gift card to new teachers in GFPS
These community programs allow DKG members to come together in friendship and fellowship to learn, grow and donate to their worthy causes. In addition to supporting the community, Both chapters also offer a scholarship to women educators pursuing an advanced degree as well as a recruitment grant for college students pursuing an education degree. Serving and supporting others keeps our members coming back month to month.
